Quote Of The Day

Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. - Robert Louis Stevenson

Our Local News:

In Sparta, NJ, tensions within the Sparta Township Planning Board have prompted a vote to replace current chair Joan Furman at the next meeting on September 10, 2025. Alternate member Bryan Zimmerman initiated the motion, citing a β€œtoxic environment” and political infighting. Furman, appointed in April 2024 and selected as chair in January 2025, also leads the Diamond Chip Ad Hoc Committee and the Master Plan Committee.

The controversy stems partly from the board’s unanimous March 19 vote declaring Sparta’s cannabis ordinances inconsistent with the master plan. Despite this, the Township Council approved the ordinances on April 22 by a 3–2 vote. Furman later questioned the legality of this move, citing Municipal Land Use Law section 40:55D-62.

Mayor Neill Clark and others criticized Furman’s communications and involvement in a petition drive to overturn the ordinances, which was ultimately deemed invalid under the Faulkner Act. Furman received an 11-page ethics complaint letter in May and was asked to resign in June but refused, denying any wrongdoing.

The next planning board meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2025.

In a message shared at the August 2025 Sparta Board of Education meeting, Sparta Education Association (SEA) President Angela DeLuccia celebrated the district’s summer achievements and readiness for the new school year. She praised the dedication of 12-month secretaries, IT staff, athletic trainers, and the Student Assistance Counselor for their behind-the-scenes work that keeps Sparta schools running smoothly year-round.

The district’s Extended School Year program helped students maintain momentum over the summer, while educators focused on curriculum updates and professional development. DeLuccia emphasized the importance of rest and renewal, noting that β€œa recharged educator is a stronger educator.”

With a settled contract and fresh rosters, SEA looks forward to a collaborative year, continuing open dialogue with the Board and administration through the IDEAS Committee. The association also voiced strong support for the upcoming Sparta Schools referendum, which aims to modernize facilities and enhance learning environments.

Residents are encouraged to vote on September 16, 2025, to help shape the future of Sparta’s education system.

Sparta Township has won a key legal case upholding its ban on short-term rentals under 28 days, following Judge Stuart Minkowitz’s August 2025 decision to dismiss a challenge from Edelweiss Realty LLC.

The disputed ordinance, introduced in April 2024, drew strong support from Mayor Neill Clark and other council members, except Josh Hertzberg.

Township Attorney Anand Dash successfully argued the measure promotes public health and safety, a view backed by the court, which found the law fair and not a violation of property rights.

This ruling means no short-term rental operations will be "grandfathered" in, regardless of when they started.

The decision is expected to influence similar debates statewide, with some locals praising the preservation of neighborhood character, while others - especially landlords - voice economic concerns.

A petition against the ban has gained traction, reflecting ongoing division within the community as Sparta moves forward with enforcement.
